My letter to trans kids

A Tetrarch tank in the colours of the trans flag - horizontal stripes of light blue, light pink, white, light pink, light blue with the words Protect trans kids

A recent episode of the Tilly’s Trans Tuesdays podcast encouraged people to write a letter to trans kids, take a photo of it, and post it to social media with the hashtag #Letters4TransKids. I’d much rather type than write with a pen, so my letter is below. I’ll post a link to the fediverse, with the hashtag, as soon as this goes live.

If you like podcasts, you should add Tilly’s Trans Tuesdays to your podcatcher. There are also text versions at the link above, if that’s more your thing.

Hello trans kids,

I know that you’re going through crap right now, because the UK is transphobic. But I truly believe that it won’t always be this way. When I was a teenager, I heard straight people complain about being called straight. They’d say, “I’m not straight. I’m normal.” Now, I hear people complain about being called cis. They say, “I’m not cis. I’m normal”. It’s the exact same bigotry, just directed at trans people.

There are still homophobic arseholes. They haven’t gone away. But they’re less likely to say it out loud because most people consider homophobia to be bad. I really believe that transphobia will go the same way. It will take time, and we’ll need to fight for it, but I’ll fight with you.

It won’t be easy, but we will fight together, and in the end, we will make the world a better place.
